![]() ![]() Taking everything into account, GKids decided that the film would not be embraced the same way other Studio Ghibli films were, and decided to cut costs by not producing a dub. While times may be changing, an animated film geared towards a teenage audience is one of the worst things you could have, as most teenagers wouldn’t be caught dead watching a cartoon. In fact, the worst part of Ocean Waves was that the target audience was primarily teenagers. The movie was also mature and would not appeal to families. While the animation was pretty good, due to the TV nature of the project the quality of the animation was of much lower quality than you would expect from a Studio Ghibli film. The people in charge watched the film and felt a pit in their stomach: the movie was going to be a tough sell. When GKids acquired the catalog they also acquired Ocean Waves, and the studio took a hard look at the film. While Disney did obtain the rights to release the movie if they wanted to, they decided to pass due to the slow pace and more mature content compared to the rest of the catalog. It was a kind of attention that most studios wouldn’t give a “practice film,” but Studio Ghibli’s name means something, and they wanted to ensure that it still did even if it was on TV. ![]() This is due to the fact that Studio Ghibli has high standards for their films, and even a TV movie was given extra attention. Instead of being a cheap film that would be made in a shorter amount of time, the film went over-budget and over-schedule. The film is set in the city of Kchi, and follows a love triangle that develops between two good friends and a new girl who transfers to their high school from Tokyo. This was the idea but, well…you know what they say about the best-laid plans. Animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten and the Nippon Television Network, Ocean Waves first aired on May 5, 1993, on Nippon TV. The higher ups felt it would be a great way to test out a new director and give the younger animators a chance to practice their skills and cut their teeth on a TV movie before moving on to the main features. The movie was planned as a television movie for Nippon Television, with the idea being for the studio to make a smaller film that would be cheaper to produce as opposed to a full theatrical movie. ![]() In its sensitivity and attention to detail, Ocean Waves makes itself into something special, and kind of magical, and so proves very much a Ghibli gem.Ocean Waves is unique in the sense that it is a rare Studio Ghibli film that was not released in theaters. Evening screenings will play in Japanese with English subtitles. Our matinee family-friendly shows will feature the English-language version, all ages welcome. Full of shots bathed in a palette of pleasingly soft pastel colors and rich in the unexpected visual details typical of Studio Ghibli’s most revered works, Ocean Waves is an accomplished teenage drama and a true discovery. Ocean Waves was the first Studio Ghibli film directed by someone other than studio founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, as director Tomomi Mochizuki led a talented staff of younger employees in an adaptation of Saeko Himuro’s best-selling novel. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships. But they soon find their friendship tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude vacillates wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic. Taku and his best friend Yutaka are headed back to school for what looks like another uneventful year. 'My heart is stronger now that you're in it' is yet another brilliant statement from The Secret World.
